Working to keep everyone safe requires being proactive in our efforts to avoid dangerous or threatening situations as well as being prepared in the event that a dangerous or threatening situation were to occur. Proactive practices in place at Woodland Intermediate School include: All parents/visitors must have completed the background check process to participate in field trips or other school sponsored activities. All parents/visitors are required to check in through the office and obtain a visitor badge. All exterior doors are marked as exit only and posted with visitor check in expectations. All areas on campus occupied by students are supervised by staff before school, throughout the school day, and during dismissal. Staff supervising students before school, on the playground, and after school wear brightly colored safety vests for immediate identification by students. Emergency drills (earthquake, fire/emergency evacuation, and lock down) are routinely practiced. Staff has communication available by telephone and/or handheld radio throughout the building and playground at all times. Security cameras monitor the front and back of the school as well as the undercover play area. Emergency plans are posted in every classroom. Emergency preparedness kits are available in every classroom. School wide emergency drills are practiced monthly. Lock down drill Earthquake drill Evacuation drill Since the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy the following proactive practices have been implemented at Woodland Intermediate School. All exterior doors, excluding the main entrance in the front of the school which is monitored by office staff, are locked at all times. All exterior doors, excluding the main entrance, function as exit only. An additional computer monitor was installed in the office. Using a split screen projection it will simultaneously display indoor and outdoor security camera images. The track, field, and playground have been closed to the public during school hours (8:00-2:35). Gates are being installed in the fence at the Salmon St. and Larch St. entrance points. They will be locked during school hours (8:00-2:35). Signs communicating a closed campus during school hours (8:00-2:35) will be posted at the Salmon St. and Larch St. entrance points. All parents/visitors must have completed the background check process to access any part of the building other than the office. Our students level of academic and social success is improved when parents and the school partner together. This is also true in the case of a dangerous or threatening situation. Parents can support their child and our school by reviewing safety precautions on a consistent basis. Internet websites focusing on school, internet, and social media safety as well as tips for helping parents work through a tragedy with their child have been provided as resources. Parents are highly encouraged to review this information and share it with their children.
